Backend Engineer — Fintech & Platform

A modern financial technology platform simplifying how people move and manage money across Africa is hiring a Backend Engineer to take ownership of the backend systems powering its product. The role focuses on backend engineering, financial integrations, APIs and transaction systems, with comfort working in production — deployments, containers, logs, monitoring and basic cloud infrastructure.

Role Objective

Build, maintain and continuously improve secure and reliable backend systems powering the company's financial products, working closely with the founders and engineering team to develop new functionality, maintain existing services and integrate external financial infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services using C# / .NET, designing clean, secure and reliable APIs.
• Develop new product functionality, improve existing services and write clean, testable, production-ready code.
• Build and maintain systems supporting wallets and balances, transactions, deposits and withdrawals, transfers, asset conversions, transaction history, fees and limits.
• Integrate third-party services including payment providers, wallet infrastructure, banking and payout services, and identity and verification services, handling webhooks, provider callbacks, timeouts, failed and pending transactions, retries and duplicate events.
• Ensure data integrity through database transactions, concurrency, idempotency, transaction state management, reconciliation, error recovery and audit trails.
• Design and maintain database structures, write and optimize queries, and investigate performance bottlenecks.
• Follow strong engineering practices around authentication, authorization, API security, sensitive data, input validation, access control, secrets management and audit logging.
• Own applications through production: deploying services, working with Docker and CI/CD pipelines, managing environments, reading logs, monitoring health and troubleshooting issues.
• Write unit and integration tests, review code, document technical decisions and support QA during releases.

Required Skills

• 3+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong C# and .NET / ASP NET Core experience.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs.
• Strong SQL and relational database experience.
• Experience integrating third-party APIs and working with webhooks.
• Strong understanding of authentication and authorization.
• Understanding of database transactions and concurrency.
• Experience building and maintaining production applications.
• Working knowledge of Docker.
• Comfortable deploying and troubleshooting backend applications in production.
• Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving ability, with the ability to work independently and take ownership.

Strong Advantage

Experience with fintech, payments, banking systems, wallet systems, crypto or digital assets, financial ledgers, reconciliation, Redis or caching, queues and background processing, CI/CD, Linux, cloud infrastructure, high-volume transactional applications and automated testing.
