About this role
Communique Advisory is the research and advisory arm of Communique, a media and intelligence company with readers in over 100 countries. It helps brands understand and shape the conversations that matter in African markets, covering reputation management, media relations, creator strategy, and research-led reporting, with operations in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and beyond. All roles are expected to start in 2027
Job Details
- Location: Remote, anywhere in Nigeria (available during West Africa business hours on working days, with occasional travel for fieldwork, interviews, and industry events)
- Job Type: Part-Time, 6-month contract (three days a week)
- Level: Mid-Level
- Reports to: Founder/CEO
- Start: 2027
About the Role
For the next six months, the role will build two data products for members of the Communique Inner Circle: Benchmarks (what creators, sponsorships, advertising, and media talent actually cost) and Funding and Money Flow (who funds the industry, which opportunities are open, and where the money is going). The Founder sets the research agenda; you execute it by running the collection system, verifying every submission, interviewing industry insiders, working with a small team of volunteers, and drafting briefs and reports. This is a craft role, not a strategy role
Key Responsibilities
- Benchmarks: run intake forms and give-to-get surveys, collect rate cards, media kits, sponsorship decks, and job ads, and interview media buyers, talent managers, recruiters, and producers about real costs
- Funding and money flow: maintain the funder directory, run a weekly sweep of funders for new opportunities, and log past awards and deals
- Verification and provenance: review every new record within a week, record its source, confidence level, and USD equivalent, and enforce the rule that no figure is published without at least five data points
- Drafting: write member briefs on major funding calls, the monthly members' Data Note, and quarterly benchmark reports
- Volunteer supervision: brief, train, and review the work of three to five volunteers handling public desk research
- Wider research support: provide occasional figures and background for advisory, editorial, and the Intelligence database
Requirements
- 2 to 4 years of experience in research, data journalism, policy, consulting, or a related field
- Genuine competence with desk research and persistence when obvious sources come up empty
- Comfortable with spreadsheets and structured data; Airtable or similar tools, survey tools, and basic statistics (medians, ranges, outliers) are a plus
- Confident asking people about money (rates, salaries, budgets) and trusted to keep it confidential
- Able to brief junior volunteers and review their work without redoing it
- Clear written English with the discipline to cite properly
- Accuracy under deadline and the confidence to flag what could not be verified
- Interest in Africa's media, culture, technology, or creative economy
- Able to manage your own priorities on a three-day week in a remote team
Compensation and Benefits
- Monthly fee of NGN 250,000 gross (pro-rated to three days a week), paid against a monthly invoice
- Internet allowance of up to NGN 20,000 per month
- Fieldwork travel and event costs covered when approved in advance
- Completion bonus of up to NGN 250,000 at the end of month 6, in proportion to targets met
- Possible renewal for a further six months or conversion to the full-time Research Associate role based on performance
