JOB SUMMARY
A leading insurance company seeks an experienced Head of Technical Services to oversee underwriting, claims, reinsurance and risk survey. The successful candidate will ensure sound risk selection, effective claims control, adequate risk transfer, regulatory compliance and long-term profitability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Technical Strategy: Develop technical strategies, governance frameworks and standards; advise Executive Management and the Board on technical matters.
- Underwriting: Set underwriting guidelines, risk acceptance criteria and authority limits. Monitor portfolio quality, loss ratios and risk concentration to drive profitable growth.
- Claims Management: Oversee major claims, settlements, reserving, negotiations, recoveries and subrogation. Analyse claims trends and implement loss-reduction measures.
- Reinsurance: Develop reinsurance strategies and placement programmes, manage reinsurer/broker relationships, monitor recoveries and counterparty risks, and protect the company’s balance sheet.
- Risk & Compliance: Ensure compliance with NAICOM regulations and applicable laws. Implement risk management frameworks and mitigation measures.
- Financial Performance: Support budgeting, forecasting, capital adequacy and technical cost management. Work with Finance and Business Development to balance growth and risk.
- Leadership: Lead technical teams, build capacity, develop succession plans and promote accountability, ethics and continuous learning.
- Reporting: Prepare technical performance and risk reports for Executive Management and the Board. Liaise with regulators, auditors and industry stakeholders.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Finance or a related field.
- Master’s degree or MBA is required.
- 5–10 years managerial experience in the technical department of an insurance or reinsurance company.
- Proven enterprise-level experience in underwriting, claims and reinsurance management.
- ACIIN or FCII qualification is required, additional risk or actuarial certifications are an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of underwriting, claims, reinsurance, insurance regulations and risk governance.
- Excellent analytical, financial, decision-making, leadership, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Strong strategic thinking, portfolio and loss-ratio management, performance management, integrity and professional judgement.

- Monthly gross salary of ₦3.3 million – ₦5 million.
